Update
Silver Sneakers The Silver Sneakers payment of $2,039.00 for April was direct deposited this week. We have 175 total people registered in Silver Sneakers. Total number of Silver Sneakers members participating in April was 122 and they came 854 times, an average of 7 times. If they had been full paying members, the YMCA would have earned $5,705 based on the monthly cost of an Active Older Adult. We need to have all Silver Sneakers members to come and scan at least ten times a month to help us cover the cost of the program.
Working Capital “When you can’t get to the YMCA in a thirty day period, the Y can provide a credit to your account for a tax deductible contribution for the value of your monthly payment”. All business both for-profit and non-profit need working capital/cash to survive. Non-profits are evaluated by several national groups such as Charity Navigator and BBB on a variety of performance measures including working capital ratios. To insure that the Springfield Family YMCA has adequate working capital/cash for the year, we are no longer allowing members to freeze their memberships over the summer or during the winter months. We can provide a contribution acknowledgement for any member at year end for any of the months you were unable to get to the Y. The decisions we make have to be what is in the best interest of the YMCA and I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause our members.
A board member and I plan to meet with the Elks, Eagles and the Union Club to investigate how their $1.00 drawing each day works for them. It could help get our scans up and possibly be a fundraiser. I know the State Attorney General Mike DeWine and we would clear with him, the YMCA and our local board before we do anything.
Charity Navigator Endorsement Charity Navigator is a national organization that provides a guide to intelligent giving for donors. Charity Navigator rates charities by evaluating two broad areas of financial health, their organization efficiency and their organizational capacity. The Springfield YMCA is not ready yet to apply for an endorsement, but we need to strive for organizational excellence and these kinds of performance benchmarks. Charity Navigator analyses three categories of organizational capacity; primary revenue growth, program expense growth and working capital ratio. In the working capital ratio category, charities depend on their reserves of liquid assets to survive downward economic trends and sustain their existing programs and services. Charities that build working capital also develop a greater capacity for expanding and improving programs. Over the next year, I will be working with the staff to develop processes to achieve these performance standards. In future updates, I will describe each of the categories in more detail.
Sunday Closing The Springfield Family YMCA will be closed on Sundays starting May 13, 2012 through the beginning of September. Sunday hours will start back up the 2nd Sunday of September on the 9th. There will still be some special activities that will still go in such as Kayak lessons and Splash Zone lifeguard practices.
Kayak Lesson Interested in learning about the sport of kayaking? The YMCA is starting an introductory course to kayaking. The course will be held at the Y pool. Participants will learn about kayaking, learn how to paddle and get in the pool in a kayak. Kayaks will be provided. Our first class will be held May 20th and time is 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. The cost of the class will be $40 for members and $50 for nonmembers. Please call 323-3781 if you are interested.
Rate Increase Please remember our full price and monthly membership dues will increase effective June 1st. The June 25th bank draft will reflect the rate increase for our monthly members. Please read the letter
here regarding the rate increase.
Aerobic Room HVAC Campaign Update The HVAC over the aerobic room is old and worn out and running at half capacity. Hauck Brothers, Inc. gave an estimate of $9,980 for purchase and installation. They found a 10 ton unit that was delivered with the wrong electrical hookup so we are able to get a discount on the purchase. We have to get a crane to take the old unit off and put the new one up. To date, we have a $4,580 commitment toward the purchase and installation of the new unit. I am working to get corporate sponsorships for the room. We will hang banners in the room listing the company names. They will also be listed as corporate sponsors of the aerobic room on our website. I will report back to the classes and our members next Thursday and Friday to update our progress. Please click
here to see the attached letter which can be passed out to people and companies you are familiar with. If anyone knows of a corporation or individual that could be a sponsor for this project, please contact me.
